dhiren
hello friends i am looking for a lightweight tripod for 10D + 70-200 f4L + 1.4X, forbird photography, currently i have bogen 3021, which would be veryheavy and which i cant carry all the time in the field, i needsomething lighter, which i could carry on for longer hours [because igo biking and walking in the field] but good enough which could carryweight of above mentioned equipments and which i could also use fortravelling. i know there are lot of threads for lightweight tripod but i want toknow from someone who has used this combination of lens. my budget iskind of $150/- thanks in advance
larry_underwood
To quote Bill Fortney (Great Photography Workshop), there are only two kinds of tripods. Those that are easy to carry, and good ones. With your camera (1.6 conversion factor), lens, and TC combination, I come up with an equivalent focal length of 448mm. I wouldn't want to go less than the Bogan 3021 that you already have. stephen_louw
I have a similiar setup (a bit heavier f 2.8 lens) and went through the same debate myself. In the end I decided against the lighter carbon fiber hiking tripods (Gitzo 1 and 2 series) as they really are not able adequately to support a camera with a moderate sized lens (+TC and flash) and are very short. Instead I settled on the Gitzo 1325, which is light (2 kg) but a little long (60 cm when folded) but very sturdy and tall enough for any situation. Tripod's are expensive, and it makes more sense to buy a good one that is able to do the job properally than to spend a bit less on what, for me anyway, would be easy to carry but inadaquate. The 1325 is the entry level in the Gitzo range. (Dont know the Manfrotto/Bogen equivalent). Stephen Louw
adam_deglmann
For focal lengths that long I second the vote for the 3021. I've had good luck with it out to 420mm and I'm sure it could easily go farther than that with proper technique. I have the pro version, and it's about as versatile as a tripod can get. richard thompson www.fotoz
I have the above with a 10D. I use a Manfrotto 3405 which is not only "GOOD" but fairly light weight also !
bobatkins
Look at the Bogen 3001. That's what I use as my "lightweight" travel tripod. You don't have a very long or heavy lens, even with the 1.4x on it, so a 3001 is enough. It's not the tallest tripod, but you can't have everything. I've used it with a 300/4L + 1.4x and had excellent results. Even with the center column extended, where it gets a bit shakey, it's still WAY better than handholding or even using a monopod. <p> In my opinion the 3021 (which I also own) is overkill for your lens combination. Nice tripod, but not when you've been carrying it for 3 hours in the field! <p> I have (very) short comments on these Bogen Tripods at <a href="http://www.bobatkins.com/photography/reviews/bogtri.html">http://www.bobatkins.com/photography/reviews/bogtri.html</a>. One of these days I'm going to have to expand these into better reviews. <p> The Gitzo carbon fiber tripods (<a href="http://www.bobatkins.com/photography/reviews/g1325.html">http://www.bobatkins.com/photography/reviews/g1325.html</a>) are nice, but out of your price range. dhiren
I have 3029 head on my 3021 legs, would this head fit on 3001 series ? or is there any other lighter head than this which goes well with 3001 series
