richard_freedman1
Question to anyone who owns or has used the new 60-120 zoom lens: Would this lens be a good option for shooting events such as weddings and barmitzvahs? Main concern is weight (these are long days!), and hand-holdability at the 1/90th sec sync speed of 2000-series cameras.
ulrik_neupert
I used the lens only for a few days on a 202 body. Did not like the handling, it was not the "snapshot" outfit I thought it might be. Its weight makes the camera very uncomfortable to hold, the closest focusing distance is not good enough for tight head shots. Try before you buy! (Alternative: for less money one could buy a second camera body with back, 60 mm lens, 150 mm lens and extension tubes in good condition). jeff_graeber
keep in mind also that MF zooms are very slow and very dark. they are not my first, second, third...etc..choice at receptions.
kevin_lackey
Theese zooms are too heavy and awkward to shoot with quickly, and as already posted are slow and dark. Don't worry about hand holding at 1/90. Your flash will freeze the bride.
Aoresteen
Skip the zoom as the previous replies state. Condsider a 50 f/2.8 and a 110 f/2. You'll love the 110, the 50 f/28 is a heavy lens. But the pair works great together. Tony
richard_freedman1
Thanks for the good advice! This lens is not rentable in Toronto (in fact, NO F-series lenses are rentable in Toronto), and it's a pretty expensive item to find out you don't like it after the fact! I guess it's cheaper to just buy a good waist-pouch for my assistant to have my three fixed-focus lenses on hand at all times! It will be interesting to see if the digital revolution eventually brings us wedding shooters out of the dark ages, with our heavy monstrosity gear! paul_fullegar
I know of a Photographer in Guernsey C.I. Using the 60 -120 for weddings. He loves it though I would agree it is a big lens,it is possible to get used to the handling.
