bryan_terce
Hi In my D100 is there much difference between using the SB50Dx external flash compared to the built-in speedlight? What's in the SB50Dx that the built-in flash can't do? I'm primarily using my D100 on people during parties and gatherings, indoor and outdoors. shane_gilbert1
You will get more power from the SB50 over the on board flash, greater control, more options of use. Plus, because the SB50 is mounted higher over the lens you have less chance of red-eye. Also, using the SC-17 cable along with a flip frame (such as Srtoboframe, a good brand)you can take vertical shots and keep the flash over the lens, so that the subject is more evenly lit. The only time I've ever use any of my on board flashes is when I first get the camera. I'll shoot it, to make sure it works, then I almost never use it again. stephenedwards
Don't forget that having the flash mounted higher gives more pleasing pictures and crucially allows you to use flash with larger and wider angle lenses. Many of the larger lenses cast a shadow with the built-in flash, e.g. with the 17-35mm lens at all but 35mm.
