shane michael
Can anyone tell me what is the difference between Canon's BP511 and the BP512. My battery grip on my 10D says not to use the BP512, but I have used it in the past with no apparent problem. Thanks, Shane
jimstrutz
The only difference is the shape of the battery's back. The BP511 has two humps covering the two cells inside it. The BP512 is filled in between the cells and rounded off in back. The BP512 was designed for Canon's camcorders where the battery just stuck out back. The BP511 was first designed to fit inside the G series, I belive. At least, that's where I saw it first. Some Canon DSLRs are designed to use either, and if the BP512 fits, it should be fine. matthew_la_rochelle1
The biggest difference is shape. The BP-512 has a single curve on the back of its casing while the BP-511 has a double curve. The BG-ED3 battery compartments have a molded ridge that corresponds to the groove between the two "lobes" on the back of the BP-511, so only that model will fit inside. The 10D can accept a BP-512 in the built-in battery compartment, but the BP-512 doesn't fit in the BG-ED3 battery grip. Beyond that, the BP-511 has a rating of 1100mAh while the BP-512 has a rating of 1200mAh. Hope that helps, Matthew
shane michael
Thanks for the information, I was currious if one was a higher MaH than the other one. I will continue to keep both in my camera bag. Shane
digitmstr
>>My battery grip on my 10D says not to use the BP512<< that's odd considering that the Canon system chart says otherwise :)
