AGFA news (maybe)

Not sure if this is new news to anybody here, or if anybody cares,

but my local dealer showed me a letter from Agfa which stated that

all RSX, APX and Scala films in all sizes of cut-film are

discontinued immediately. Anybody with a preference for them might

want to stock up.

It has been known for some time that the RSX, APX have been discontinued in sheet sizes - they have been using up old stock and producing no more. I'd be suprised if you have been able to find any decent quantities for some time. The Scala was also guessed at having been discontinued though I don't think Agfa actually admitted it.

Agfa is now saying the same things they said about 120 film as they said about sheet film a year or so ago - so it's probably a good guess that will be gone soon too.

I'm in the USA. In addition the letter said that all the Optimas in 35mm will be discontinued leaving just the amateur C41 emulsions, and they said 100 and 800 speeds would be sold from existing stock but production has ceased. At least that's the way I remember it, it's been a few days and I didn't memorize the letter. Sounds like Agfa's entire film operation is swirling the drain. Other manufacturers are sure to follow suit, because in their ineptitude they are relying on sales to make their business decisions instead of listening to the wise sages on the internet who proclaim that film will always be around.

As I understand, Bayer have been trying to flog off their Agfa arm

without success for some time. In reassessing their market

plan I believe that they have chosen to leave Kodak & Fuji to slog

it out in the higher end of the market and have opted to emulate

the secret 'third' giant of film production and sales Konica.

Just provide consumer materials in 35mm and support their

network of high street labs.

My real concern centres on whether they will see fit to continue to

manufacture and supply those other product ranges which were

probably more widely used than their film Chemistry and

paper.

I must admit a hankering for Rodinal and Neutol and to see

these disappear might cause me grief. But it's years since the

legendary Agfa papers such as Record Rapid and Portriga

Rapid have given them any real 'quality' profile. Their 'Classic'

FB paper is on a base that is much too thin and the glossy

surface, air-dried, has an oily appearance I am not overly fond of.

I would be keen to learn if there is any connection between Agfa

manufacturing and Tetenal the paper is very similar in many

regards.

Agfa was spun off from Bayer last year and is now an imaging company, not part of the Pharma or Ind chem giant. They will likely be specializing in consumer 35mm film and X Ray.

They have recently opened a plant in Suzhou China fo spool and package 35mm film from Germany or Belgium, as China and India are still big markets.

Cheers
