andry_hermawan
Hi there, the other day i just shot almost 200 pics of a park and beach w/o any problem. when i got home, i took off the lens and cleaned it, the camera had been cleanead in the morning before the shooting. then i put back the lens on, took some shots to check if the lens clean...then this weird problem occured. first 2-3 shots were ok, after that, the AF did not work. the lens searching to focus, and what even weird is, it will focus only in vertical orientation and tilted up a liitle bit..it won't focus with horizontal format unless tilted up almost 90 degree. what happened? i have 3 lenses and tried them all, still happening. I can hear a very little "click" sound when i tilt up the camera. Something might have been loosened. so it will never focus when tilted down, only vertical tilted up a little, or horizontal tilted almost 90 degree up, or use camera upside down (the shutter button will be on the bottom) then it'll work as normal. All other functions are OK, only this AF. How long would i be without my D100 if i send it to Nikon service? this should be free, right? it is still under 1 year warranty and it was not misused or wet or dropped or anything like that. BTW, i have shots about 8400 pics since Oct 2003. anybody had this experience before? thanks in advance....
spencer_hahn
Which lens and what did you clean it with?
EricM
scrape the contacts gently with a razor knife. then with rubbing alcohol on a q-tip, give them a wipe.
andry_hermawan
I only have 3 lenses, nikkor 50 F1.8, sigma 24-70 dg ex f2.8, and sigma apo 70-300 macro. I cleaned the lenses using lens tissue with a couple drops of eclipse. I cleaned the contact on the camera, still no luck. I suspect the "click" sound is the problem. I guess the mirror behind the 45degree angled glass is somehow loose and only be in the right position when the camera is tilted up. the wrong position of the mirror causes the lens to search for focus.sometimes the lens stops searching and "focus" and the camera ready to shoot, but this focus is way off out of focus, so blurr. the camera thinks it finds focus, but not. AF is normal only when the camera is tilted up. whta's wrong? do you think this will be covered in nikon warranty? how long is usually the repair process? what a day... EricM
Ah man, yeah. In it goes. It can take ages to get it back; depends who is qualified in the back or if it has to be shipped to where someone actually has the screwdrivers
spencer_hahn
Ah, yes, that is the reason. I'm not sure exactly how it's set up in the D100, but in the F5 the middle three focus sensors rely in the image being projected downward by the second mirror. The two side AF sensors use the image projected straight forward, through the mirror. Try testing the focus using only the side sensors and see if it works, at least temporarily. As you may know, the main mirror projects the image upward into the pentamirror/pentaprism to be seen through the viewfinder. In the case of the F5, the meter also uses the image projected upwards. The second mirror projects some light that penetrates the first mirror downward, and in the case of the F5, is used to control AF from the middle three AF sensors. johnmarkpainter
Andry, Take the lens off and look at the mirror....Mine just did the same thing and there was a little black flap loose under the mirror. I just popped it back in position and all has been fine. I will send it in anyway, but I am not in a hurry right now. jmp

In the case of the F3 there are tiny clear spots in the mirror.

Regards,

Dave.

ShunCheung
Andry, if you find out from Nikon about exactly what is wrong with your D100, could you post a follow up to this thread? At least I am curious to learn about these D100 problems, as I have one myself. Thanks in advance.
