zuiko v nikkor

I wanted to get some subjective appraisals of the performance of

these two lens systems. I'm thinking of buying an SLR to learn photo

basics and was looking at either an Olympus or Nikon manual camera.

Most experts I've asked seem to indicate that both (and Canon) are

excellent, but I wanted to know the differences between them, if any.

From the web galleries I've seen, Nikkor images *seem* to be more

contrasty and well-defined (especially in b&w). But Zuiko renderings

have been compared to Leica... Unfortunately there don't seem to be

any web pages that compare photos of the same subject, but taken with

different cameras and lenses. Direct comparisons are generally

conveyed with numerical values, which don't seem to tell you much. I

would think that Nikkon, Olympus (and Canon) make their lenses

slightly differently, which would result in different levels of

quality that could be recognized - at least in side by side

comparison. I'm sure all the major lens manfacturers put out quality

glass - but there must be definable differences.

If anyone has comparitive experience between Nikkor and Zuiko (and

Canon), please let me know what you think.

Thanks.

Charles

Charles, if you are wanting to learn photo basics I suggest you choose a camera which feels good in your hands and one on which the controls seem to come most easily and naturally to your fingers. Differences in rendition by the various manufactures' lenses do exist but they are subtle, and of little importance when you are learning the craft of photography.
