alessandro_della_valentina
Hi, here a very particular and strange question! Inside the original bayonet's cap, near the extern circumference, there is a little black number and it isn't the same for all caps. For example: my 21mm(f/3.5)'s cap has the number 4; my 200mm(f/4)'s cap has the number 1. I'm curious to know what thin number means. Is there someone who can help me? ilkka
Could be some sort of manufacturing batch number. With few exceptions, caps are not made for a specific lens.
akajohndoe
Those sort of numbers are usually a manufacturing identifier to be able to track back to the plant or machine that built the part.
andy radcliffe
The caps would have been moulded in multi-impression tooling. As maybe 8 or 10 mouldings would be produced per shot, it is common practice to code up the actual inserts for identification in case of any problems with the mould. Andy.
