zoom too fast to open and close (G3)

do you know if there is a way to be precise with the zoom ?

 

if you want to take a macro .... or a frame on a wall and surround

exactly the frame the steps of the zoom are too larges

you cannot be very precise

Since you can't be precise in macro,then how about getting as close as you can and leave at least enough room to crop it later in your favorite graphics program. I use a similar featured camera and find that one sometimes needs to move the whole camera as well as the zoom-a technique one uses in macro work as par for course (see searches on focus rails and bellows and similar closeup schemes). Framing precision,assuming it is ever possible, is going to be tough methinks,so close enough often is the best to expect. Trusting other answers will gain you a better approach plus enlighten me on how to make a digital rangefinder LCD do this without lots of spare room. Have you used a tripod? A rail for moving camera. Hmmm,what else..I hope I understand the question at this evening hr. Another issue to wonder is the barrel distortion,for picture frames and such. Doesn't that get to be a muddle too,erick?
