ananda1
Hi friendsI am looking for a zoom lens for my D40. After reading in this forum, now I have two choice.1. Nikon 70-300mm, this good for auto-focus but at the same time mold is plastic and no macro option. VR is the point one should think.2. Sigma 70-300mm, this has macro option at 200-300mm but no auto-focus.I prefer manual focus most of the time and planning for Sigma since it offers macro. I don?t know much about the usefulness of VR.Can anyone suggest me which one will be better.PS: My budget is $ 300.Thanks in advanceSincerelyAnand
hans_janssen
VR is very useful at the long end and the macro of the Sigma isn't that useful.
rob_piontek
Personally, unless I was buying a lens for a very specific task which doesn't require AF, I wouldn't buy a non AFS lens for the D40.
ananda1
Hans and Rob Thank you very much for your suggestion. Now I am seriously thinking about Nikon AF-S 70-300mm.
Matt Laur
Indeed, Ananda, manual focus on the D40 could be enough of a challenge to make that the issue, right there. The VR can be tremendously helpful - but only for certain types of subjects and circumstances. I use two VR zooms, and have no doubt in my mind that the VR has helped me to acquire workable images that I'd otherwise have missed. What sort of shooting will you be doing? ananda1
Matt Thanks, I don't have anything serious about shooting in my mind. I just started my DSLR work(Nov 2007). I missed many shots only because, I can't reach close enough to the subject with my D40 kit lens (which I feel inferior now). After reading the review on Nikon 70-300mm at KenRockwell.com, I feel that, it is also not worth for the money. One more option is AF-S 28-200mm, but right now I cant afford it. I am confused totally. Anand
hugh_davis
Ananda, Check out the 70-300 VR lens review at www.bythom.com--in fact, IMO, that entire site is worthwhile reading. Good luck, HWD
acbeddoe
The 70-300mm AF-S VR is definitely worth the price. My brother has one on his D40, along with the 24-120mm AF-S VR.
