chuck_hayden
I have a zoom lens on my Canon 40D and its very loose. In otherwords when I carry the camera over my shoulder the lens moves out to its 'longest length'. Is there anyway to tighten it up.

saskphotog
It's called "zoom creep" and, unless you have one of the specific lenses that have an adjustable zoom friction, no.

The factory may be able to fix it for you, for a price I expect.
peterblaise
.

Hi Chuck,

A massage therapist or physical therapist my recommend exercises to help you tighten up your shoulder. ;-)

Me? I always carry my camera by holding the lens, never letting the camera dangle loose, so zoom creep is not an issue for me.

Alternatively, if there is a lock on the lens, I have disassembled the lens and carved additional notches at each zoom step (say, at 28mm, 50mm, 100mm, 200mm, and 300mm), so I can lock the lens at a preferred focal length for the time being. What lens do you have, and can you replace it with one with a lock, and can you then custom enhance the lock to suit your preferences?

.
monika_epsefass
Which one is it? A 70-300 something? I had one of these, and was told that I should call it a feature of that lens really.... everybody complained. Guess you do with the same one, then?
tommyinca
Thats a typical problem with push pull zoom (ie: 100-300). If you fix it, it will just happen again after you use it not for long. Unless it is way too loose, I would just learn to live with it.
