andrew_goldberg
hey guys, at the moment I have a 55mm 1.8 lens, and I love it, however I feel intrusive sometimes when I get up to close to my subjects, especially if they weren't posed. What's the most standard, reliable, and most popular zoom lens, thats not too expensive and not tooo zoomy. thanks so much, I always buy whatever you guys tell me, Andrew
barry schmetter
One nice choice would be the 75-150 f/3.5 Series E zoom. It costs about $100-140 used and is as sharp as any zoom Nikon makes. It's a push-pull type zoom, and very often the zoom action is a bit loose, but it's a great value if you can find one in good condition.
thidglance
The Tokina ATX Pro 28-80 F2.8 is a great standard zoom with a very good manual focus feel. It will also AF on any AF nikon bodies you might buy in the future.
todd peach seattle, washi
Andrew, I need some clarification here: are you looking for a 'standard zoom' (which I interpret as from moderate w/a to moderate tele), or a 'tele zoom' (moderate tele to longer tele; I'm getting this from your 'intrusive . . . too close to subjects' comment)?
The 75-150 f/3.5 series E is an excellent little 'tele zoom' that's very inexpensive. It also has the advantage of being 'non-intrusive', it has a very benign-looking 52mm filter. Another lens I have in this range is the 80-200 f/2.8 AFD, and the 77mm filter (and appropriate bulk) scares hell out of some subjects.
If you're looking for an inexpensive 'standard zoom', there are lots of choices; the 43-86 and 36-72 'E' come to mind. dj_soroka
I would forget the 43-86 and 36-72 just mentioned, there are better options. You might want to look into a fast lens and zoom combo; i.e. 50-135 mm f/3.5 zoom and 35 mm f/2 or 28-50 mm f/3.5 zoom and 85 mm f/2. Either of the above combos that I suggest should be very satisfying.
maria_s.
If you are worrying about being intrusive why not get a nice prime wide angle lens? You get a better quality and 28m f1.8 Nikkor will give you all you need without poking your camera in somebody's nose. I just missed a sale of one on E-bay -- it went for $75 in excellent condition; they usually sell for around $150-200 (B&H).
