ZF 50 Makro-Planar f/2 portrait samples?

Hi there,

Wondering whether anyone has been using the Zeiss ZF Makro-Planar 50mm f/2 (not

the ZF 50 f/1.4) for people shots, and could share some wide aperture samples

here.

I currently have the ZF 35/2 and 85/1.4, and enjoy both of these very much.

On a DX size sensor, 50mm often is an excellent focal length for head/shoulders

shots, and I would be interested in the Zeiss if its "look" were more pleasing

than my Nikon 50/1.4 or 45 Ai-P.

Again, it is the ZF Makro-Planar 50mm f/2 I am inquiring about, not the ZF

50/1.4.

Thanks.

David

Hi Nick,

Thanks. Some of those are really helpful, though, as you say, not people shots.

Somewhere I saw an image posted from the 50/2 that had (surprisingly) quite funky bokeh, and that gave me some pause. But the flower images at the link you provided certainly show gorgeous background character.

Still would love to see some portraits with this lens.

Best wishes,

David

For portraits the best Nikon lens at F2 on the mtf is the 50mm f1.2 ais. The f1.2 Nokkor 50mm has 9 rounded iris blades and this is just like the iris of the 85 f1.4 so you get a nice bokeh. You also can set in between f1.2 and f2.0 so its more flexible. It cost less than the Zeiss. But if you want a good macro lens maybe look for the Sigma 70mm f2.8 which would be equivalent to a 105mm on DX sensor DSLR. To me the 70mm is a more useful portrait length too since the 50mm is too wide and the 85mm is equal to 127.5mm on DX dslr. Also, the 70mm will give you more working space for the same ratio magnification than the 50mm will.

You could probably buy both the 50mm f1.2 ais and Sigma 70mm macro for less than the Zeiss macro and have the best for both situations.
