Zeiss 517 Nettar 6x6 dead shutter, need replacement.

Recommended Posts

I have this mint Zeiss Nettar 6X6 camera with a Zeiss Novar f/4.5

lens. I sent it for repair to Carol. Sadly, Carlol Flutot answered

and told me that the shutter, a Prontor-SVS was kaput!

The Novar lens on this camera is superb. I am sad now that if I do

not find a replacement shutter that this poor little camera will go

to an early grave.

Can anyone recommend a shutter where I can fit the front and rear

elements of this lens? I do not care if the f/stops are correct, I

can always mark them for the Novar lens.

The intent is to find a more rugged shutter for this lens that will

last at least a little longer. The Prontor-SVS was not a strong

shutter, and it did not survive this last 50 years. I am afraid

that if I get a similar shutter, that it will also pass away soon,

therefore sending me back to square one. This camera has been a

great companion for a long time, and the thought of parting with it

saddens me.

Any ideas on how I could "kluge" myself something that will fit this

lens will be more than appreciated.

Thank you.

In general I did not make bad experiences with Prontor SVS shutters, except that they sometimes get awfully stuck after decades of non-usage like many other Prontor shutters (it did not happen that frequently with Compur shutters). Also, their selftimer and M sync mechanism must be properly adjusted since the selftimer gears are ALWAYS involved when firing the shutter, and failure of the selftimer assembly and/or its internal release tabs will cause total failure of the shutter. Anyhow this is not beyond repair, the Prontor shutter manual covers the issue of adjusting those tabs comprehensively. Except for one (where I broke a tab - I did not have the manual back then) I got them all back to work. Usually they are not adjusted very precisely (adjustment is mainly done by 'stretching', i.e. punching carves, of the shutter cams), and their top speed seems a bit optimistic.

But if you want to you can switch to rim-set Compur shutters of the same diameter. Lens threads and thickness, i.e. external dimensions, usually are more or less standard so shutters often are interchangeable. Check how the second lens element of your lens is mounted - if it has its seat inside the helicoid tube there should be no problems swapping shutters. A Compur shutter I tested might be used as standard for shutter testers after minor cleaning of the escapement gears - it was built in 1931.
