workshops vs community college

I have no previous training or knowledge in photography..I'm not sure

if I'll have time for a real school so I think I'm going to attend

School of Visual Arts workshops in NY instead of attending a

community college?

Here's the link of the program:

Please tell me what you guys think. I'm currently pursuing a career

in a different field so I can pay for the bills and help my family

out but I believe photography is my passion. I don't want to get

stuck doing something i dont love but I don't have the pleasure of

going to a school to get a degree in photography.

Thanks!

I don't know about New York, but here in Tucson the college route gives you exposure to local professionals (as guest lecturers). The profs are great, have diverse backgrounds and outlooks, and have community and professional connections and other help for you during and after your semester(s).

You absolutely positively DO NOT need a degree from a Photography school to learn about taking pictures or learning how to follow you passions and do business at the same time. Start small & close to home. First suggestion would be to join a local camera club, make friends, & go shooting as much as you can. Read lots of Photo Books. Join Web Forums. Learn what types of pictures you like taking most; i.e. Nature, Travel, Sports, Fashion, PhotoJournalism, etc.. Go to the biggest best camera store in your area and see if they have a bulletin board with photo-related community announcements. Offer to help a local photographer who shoots what you like in your area; be a volunteer intern assistant. Then as you start to develop; take workshops. Invest in workshops and better gear, but only when you feel you've got a complete hang of one thing and have to move on to the next. Hope that Helps & Good Luck.
