Wide angle Standard Zoom

Hello All,
If I wanted a DX, wide angle, standard zoom lens not made by Nikon(budgetary concerns) but for Nikon

Mount, what would be a great choice.
Budget - $500Max
I have been looking at Tamron 17-50mm F 2.8. I only Have Nikon Glass now and am leery about buying

an "off" brand. That MM range is what I am looking for or even wider say 10-24ish types.
I am sorry for this thread, I hate these. I do not know about the other brands of glass, and there are too

many options. Reading specs online is not the same as first hand experiance from acutal users.

<

p>Thanks in advance,

wide angle?

or standard?

They are two different things to many people.

The Tamron you mention gets raves around here and seems to be one of Tamron's few (imho) winners. It goes from

moderately wide to short telephoto on one lens.

for wider angle, at that price, the Tokina 12-24 or Sigma 10-20 (the old one) are winners. They go from very wide to

moderately wide.
