kevin m.
Does anyone know of a reputable U.S. retailer who sells the Epson RD-1s digital rangefinder? Thanks!
boyd
You can check rangefinderforum.com but I believe the only place is Robert White in England right now
vinay_patel
From what I read Epson doesn't plan to import it. I also read that the "s" is nothing but a firmware upgrade that can be applied to an RD1, though I don't know if that's true. If it is, I would expect to see some RD1 activity on the 'bay over the next few months. A lot of people who bought them are in line for an M8. kevin m.
Thanks. Just curious, as I'd never seen them at a major retailer. The needlessly retro 'winding' lever kept me away.
vinay_patel
Needless perhaps but not pointless. The RD1 was based on the Cosina platform also used for the R2A/R3A, which did not have a motorized film wind/shutter armer. Fitting one would have required a more extensive redesign of the workings and perhaps a more capacitious battery, and would no doubt whatever additional sound it made would've been a bone of contention to some users. Mr. Kobayashi is an innovator in certain respects but a traditionalist in others.

andrew robertson
"I also read that the "s" is nothing but a firmware upgrade that can be applied to an RD1, though I don't know if that's true." It's true. The R-D1 is a great camera and the M8 may well drive the prices way down on it.

Do you also stay away from the Leica M rangefinders? The Hexar RF has a proper motorized advance, unlike the needlessly retro crank of the M series. photohead
They seem to be only avilable in USA direct from Epson at the USA Epson internet store: http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/consumer/consDetail.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yes&oid=49164277 Maybe you will need the firmware upgrade for an older version: http://esupport.epson-europe.com/RD1s/Registration.aspx?lng=en-GB
