__jon__
>Magic Man , may 06, 2005; 06:31 p.m. >ok, and why? If you don't know that, then you should probably make the slightest effort to do some research. Then you won't ask others what scanner you need when you haven't described what you scan, how often you scan, etc.
stwrtertbsratbs5
For reviews look here: http://kenrockwell.com/epson/4990.htm and here: http://www.photo-i.co.uk/Reviews/interactive/Epson%204990/Page%201.htm I bought the Epson and it's pretty good, though not as good as a dedicated film scanner. mr.wind-upbird
I got a 4990 to use on my grandpa's old medium and large format negatives from the 20s onward. It's been great. It came with Silverfast (which I'm not too big a fan of), but the HDR scanning function in Silverfast has come in handy.
magic_man
thank you for answering... i like to scan medium format photos. it?s what the scanner should buy for. i?m really dont know, whichown i should by.
brian ball
Macworld gave the 9950F slightly better reviews. All I can say is that the Epson 4870, which I use, leaves much to be desired in terms of optics but is otherwise quite good for lower resolution work. trooper
I'm still lukewarm on my 9950F. It sometimes surprises me with the quality it's capable of but usually leaves me feeling unsatisfied with the results. The fact that I get decent results at times, makes me think there could more operator error involved than basic equipment deficiencies! The medium format film holders don't seem to fit the various film brands (width variations) all of the time and I wish they were more forgiving in that way.
