Which Ranger pack?

Hi all,

I am contemplating buying into the Elinchrom Ranger system, would it be correct

to say that the basic RX pack has two outputs and always sends the same power to

each, and the AS pack always sends 2/3 of the power to one output and 1/3 to the

other, assuming you have two heads connected? Do they behave identically when

only one head is connected, sending 100% of the power you select to a single

output? If different power is required on two heads, is the only solution with

the basic RX pack to connect each one to its own pack? (The 2 kilo difference in

weight does not matter to me).

Also, how useful is the speed feature (the A heads) for shooting people, in

practice? Does it make a real difference?

My main application for the system will be to drive medium-large softboxes on

location and some studio.

Thanks!

I use the Ranger RX Speed AS. You are correct - it always sends power 1/3 and 2/3 to the two heads. If you only have one head connected to the A port, it sends 100% of the power to that head; if you only have one head connected, and it's connected to the B port, it will get 1/3 power.

As for the heads, that depends what you want to shoot. Even the S head is relatively fast - 1/2310 sec if connected to the B port. You'll need to decide for yourself what kind of speed you need; if you're typically shooting stationary people, it's not going to make any difference. If you're trying to shoot sports action or fast-moving fashion, you may need the A heads.

Hope this helps...
