lisa_gundy
I have a Nokin D70s and would like to know what lens would be best for shooting volleyball games in a gym.
tatephotography
What about the recommendations given to you in your last thread? Seems a 50mm f1.8 was recommended several times. As was the 70-200mm f2.8. Indoor volleyball pictureshttp://www.photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=00Jw0f
Matt Laur
Yup, Lisa... it's hard to imagine the topic getting better treatment than on that last thread. The only other thing to explore would be how to approach the issue of flash, if you decide to jump off that particular aesthetic/manners cliff. But, lens-wise, I think that last thread covered it. If you're stinging from the cost of the wonderful 70-200VR, then you're going to have to consider maybe a used 80-200 f/2.8 and maybe a mono/tripod. tonybynum
200/2 would be a nice choise, just a tad bit more dough. . . The 120-300 2.8 sig may not be a bad choice either.
tonybeach
Fast primes. How many times do we have to revisit the same topics here?
hans_janssen
A AFS 80-200 2.
dan_k6
70-200 2.8 is a fine lens. You will be very happy with it.
jim_ochwat
The Nikon 180mm f2.8 ED-IF would be a good choice.
stwrtertbsratbs5
Don't like the lens prices? Flash is an option, and it can be done discretely - if you have access to the upper reaches of the gym to mount gear and remote triggers. But that's going to co$t, too! And you'll need to rig safety cable to protect the audience from falling gear.
fullmetalphotograper
I would not buy 50mm. Just to few uses for it. I would buy a 70-200 f2.8. If cost is a factor I would recommend a 180 f2.8 or 135mm. For most gym sports my 70-200 is my workhorse. The other lens I use a lot is 12-24mm f4.<div></div>
morganlashley
Lisa...if price is a concern...why not sell your D70s buy a Canon Digital Rebel and the 70-200 f4....same price as a Nikkor 70-200 VR..or if you'd like I'll sell you my 70-200VR for $1500 barely used...I've switched to Canon.... thomas_sullivan
I shoot indoor Youth Ice Hockey. Volleyball is probably done under the same lighting intensity. So, I disagree with the last poster who suggested using the f/4 lens. You will have to use too slow a shutterspeed to make up for the difference between f/4 and f/2.8....even at ISO of 1600. You gernerally don't want to be shooting below 1/320th of a second shutterspeed to not have a mass of blurred pics. You just can't get away from the price for doing really good coverage of these indoor sports....you need a 70-200mm f/2.8 zoom.......and you'll still be occasionally screeming for an f/2.0 version of it. tommyinca
With club volleyball or high school volleyball, you can use a 70-200/2.8. However, on a D70, 70mm may be at time a bit too long for tight club locations. F2.8 can also be a tad slow for some club/gym location. You won't be shooting too long if you use flash. IMHO, fast short to medium prime are best for Volleyball 50,85,105 and 135. The larger aperture also help isolate the the player from back ground distraction (a lot with club). tonybeach
Morgan, you are lucky that the last two threads you started were deleted; otherwise you would have to live with the shame.
morganlashley
Anthony...the shame of what? Canon makes better high end cameras than Nikon at this point in time...that's a fact...I can afford the best, another fact...you waste an inordinate amount of your life bickering in an Internet chat room...yet another fact... tonybeach
Morgan, many photographers with much more experience and skill than you prefer the D2x. When you understand why then maybe you can go around telling us who makes the best cameras. I have learned a lot from the internet, I come to this forum to see what else I can learn and to sometimes share what I know. You appear to come here to spread BS, and that's my opinion because I'm not arrogant enough to proclaim what is or isn't a "fact".
