What did you shoot this weekend? (Sept.19 - 21, 2008)

I guess I'll start this week. Thursday was my first ever attempt at shooting high school water polo. Caught the

end of the girls game and all of the boys. Coaching it is one thing, photographing it is something else. Has

anyone else shot water polo? Any comments or critiques are very much welcome and appreciated.<br>

I shot another night football game using my 80-200mm f/2.8. Again, I tried using the "expert's" recommendations and set the camera to a higher ISO (1250 and 1600), set it to full open aperture priority at f/2.8, and let go. Again, my pictures were AWFUL--blurry, grainy, etc.--but well-lit. I refuse to listen to anymore recommendations. I'm going back to ISO 800 or 1000, aperture f/2.8, and will use exposure compensation to catch the action. If it's too dark, who cares, I'll spend hours and hours cleaning it up! Hard work never hurt anyone! ):-( Thanks (once again) for letting me vent!

By the way, great photos everyone! I like the variety polo, soccer, football, and fencing. Will, your face-mask

capture is great. I hope the penalty was called. Our game got a little out of hand. Even though we won (48-14), our

team had over 160 yards in penalties. Even our coach had a couple of warnings. I've got one half-decent photo of

the flag being thrown on him--LOL!

Laura, these shots that I posted were also night shots. I was shooting f/2.8 and between ISO3200 to ISO6400. The reason

why your shots were blurry is because your shutter speed wasn't fast enough. If you're shooting at night under stadium

lights, your lighting should be constant and consistent so shoot in manual mode. Shoot wide open and you want to achieve

a shutter speed of at the very least 1/400. Adjust your ISO to whatever you have to, to get a good exposure at that shutter

speed. It will probably be ISO3200 o ISO6400. Yes they will be noisy but that can be fixed with some noise reduction

software.
