mike_goebel
A "slave flash" is a flash that is fired not by the photographer, but by another flash. A photographer can be tethered to his main flash by a sync cord or a radio signal but all his other slave flashs are set off by the light of the main flash. andrew_chen3
so they only go off after the master flash goes off? what would be the point of having so many flashes though
Matthew Currie
"what would be the point of having so many flashes though" More even lighting, eliminating harsh shadows or dark areas, creating specific shadows, etc. Lighting can be very complex. Many studio shots are done with very carefully arranged lighting from multiple sources. Slave flashes act quickly enough that they are close enough to being simultaneous. Andrew, you would benefit, I think, from a good basic book on photography, which would answer many of your questions in better detail and probably include informative illustrations. I don't know what's currently in print, but I have seen a number of such books which include descriptions of the equipment and how it is used, and such things as comparative pictures to illustrate the effects of depth of field, focal length, lighting, etc. A picture really is worth a thousand words where some of this is concerned!
