rich815
"Eric Bush of the Michigan Gaming Control Board says many casinos in the Midwestuse security measures as sophisticated as those in Las Vegas and Atlantic City. Many of them, Bush says, have digital cameras covering every inch of the casinofloor that can "read the serial number on a bill lying on the table." Article here: http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2007-03-05-casinos_N.htm?csp=15 So what do you think, Canon, Nikon, some new technology of glass only casinoscan buy? LOL! sam_thompson2
It's probably a Panasonic or Sony housed in a pan tilt system. http://www.skywaysecurity.com/color_ptzcameras.cfm It's really not that impressive considering that the distance from the camera to a table where the bill is probably at most 8-10 feet. kelly_flanigan1
The technology is called a "zoom lens".

sfdgs
Technology is amazing. I found this rare lens that allows me to capture an image of a dog from 40 feet away. They carry them at places called "camera shops." Hopefully the rest of the world doesn't find out because everyone will buy these things to bring far away objects appear closer! ralph_jensen
Ouch! Enough dumping; I think Rich gets the idea and will think a little longer next time before pushing the "New Post" button....
craig_gillette
I'd have been more surprised if he'd suggested midwestern casinos don't have sophisticated security. "Come and get it!"
marc_van_lommel
CCTV with zoom lenses are an amazing thing ... no Nikon, Canon ... Sony, Philips and other CCTV cam makers ...
andrew robertson
When I go to the casino I mention 'card counting' just to make them put a few goons on me. Then I hit the buffet, and naturally I do not gamble!
Former P.N Member
Actually it's not all that outrageous (or a load of crap). Here's a resized image I took a few years ago at a photo expo -
http://www.rtope.com/mi/Sigma_120-300_01(1).jpg
...and here's a crop of the left wrist -
http://www.rtope.com/mi/Sigma_120-300_01(2).jpg
Not bad considering that it was taken in an exhibition hall with terrible lighting with a Canon 10D hand held. Oh, the lens - Sigma 120-300 f/2.8
It would have been a lot sharper had I not been hand holding but believe me that kind of resolution is available to us 'mere mortals' if you want it. milton arrow
Welcome to the 21st century. BTW, there are satellites up yonder that can read license plates, and x-ray machines that can see through clothing!
jeff_drew4
What a load . . .! I rarely see "dollars" lying out for visual recognition in any of the midwestern casinos! The majority of gamblers are using coins or plastic cards for their "amusements." So the security department uses sharp lenses or whatever, no surprise. The government subsidized spy satellites use even better stuff that can sex a gnat at 400 miles! :-) Now THAT's exciting! :-) Honey . . . where's my tin foil beanie? joseph_wisniewski
The Michigan Gaming Control Board is still smarting from a few years ago, when gamblers discovered that tokens from Casino Windsor would work in the slots in Detroit, at a time when the exchange rate made this a 40% boost in the gambler's favor. The average Detroiter thinks Ann Arbor, Michigan is more foreign than Windsor, Ontario.
kelly_flanigan1
In craps the boxman counts out your 100's in a fan style flat on the table so each bill's serial can be read. If you are passing fake 100's the tapes can help pin the faulty bills to you. After pulling the chips out for you and plain view the bills are stuffed down into the slot. The technology to read 1/8 inch type from 4 to 8 feet away is not much at all. Its called a lens. The table to lens distance is fixed; the bill are held still for a few seconds. The table is not moving either.
