Whale watching in Monterey

  1. Our goal was to see Orcas, but they are rare this time of year, so that didn't happen. I like to get breaches, which are infrequent and challenging even in Maui in February, and that wasn't happening on this mild October day in Monterey. Nonetheless, several humpbacks (we had four coming within a few feet of the boat for nearly an hour) were feeding alongside maybe a couple of hundred seals with a few seagulls swooping about, and all in all it was the most amazing whale watching my girlfriend and I have experienced, so a real wow from us to this day in central California that managed to be more impressive than our excursion to Cabo San Lucas (where I did get a breach) and many times on the water in Maui over the last few years, and being just two hours from where we live was an extra bonus. Highly recommended -- but as always, YMMV.
