You are invited to upload one or more of your landscape photos and, if you’d like, to accompany your image with some commentary: challenges you faced in making the image? your intent for the image? settings? post-processing decisions? why you did what you did? the place and time? or an aspect you’d like feedback on? And please feel free to ask questions of others who have posted images or to join the discussion. If you don’t feel like using words, that’s OK too—unaccompanied images (or unaccompanied words, for that matter) are also very much welcomed. As for the technicalities, the usual forum guidelines apply: files < 1 MB; image size <1000 px maximum dimension.

I’ve almost posted this a couple of times before, each time cropping in a bit tighter, and each time not being quite satisfied. This time I left out about 2/3 of the frame, and I think I’ve finally got it where I want it.

As a front came through smoke began to slowly clear from the coast during the afternoon prior to our departure. When this was taken there was still hazy smoke not too far inland. It was a relief to see blue sky again along the basalt terraces in Yachats. The wave action was pretty good, even at low tide. Pelicans frequented the large formation on the left. This particular area became a favorite location.

Sun pillar observed before sunrise this morning during my typical dog walk in the hills above Idaho Falls. Sun pillars are caused by the sun reflecting off ice crystals as they float down in high cirrus clouds. There is still some smoke in the air, closer to the ground than the high clouds, which contributes to the red in the sunrise.

The first five photos represent five different orders of magnitude of landscape scales--I love this!

If you're wondering about the difference in scale I see between jlineen's and Glenn's: with jlineen's, my attention is drawn to the lake and ocean, while with Glenn's, I'm drawn to the sun pillar.
