movingfinger
I recently upgraded my Vuescan to 7.6.74 (no particular reason, just that it was newer and so presumably better). My previous version was a 7.6.something as well and the download is just titled vuesca76 so, unfortunately, the download overwrote my previous version. I say 'unfortunately' because this newer version does not behave as I expect, and like all my earlier versions behaved, and now I cannot go back. Specifically, 'preview' and 'scan' images are dramatically different. My 'preview' scans in this new verion are basically junk (and these are slides which I scanned already with earlier versions and which looked great in 'preview' mode). Brightness, color, everything is just wierd in 'preview'. Fortunately when I 'scan' the capture is much improved but this has messed up my workflow which consisted of (1) 'preview' (2) do minor adjustments of brightness/etc and then (3) high res 'scan' for saving and photo editor processing. a. Have others experienced this strange behavior in the new Vuescan release? b. Is there some Vuescan software setting which, in pre 7.6.74 releases was automatically set, but which now needs to be manually set and which will make 'preview' and 'scan' align? Any advice/suggestions/sympathy will be appreciated.
leonard_evens
On occasion, there are glitches with new versions of Vuescan. Often these are restricted to one particular scanner. Usually, Ed Hamrick fixes them in the next version. You can send him a report about your problem at www.hamrick.com. You might also look at the newsgroup comp.periphs.scanners. If you send me your email address, I can send you the 7.6.70 version as an attachment, which I'm using currently with an Epson 3200. In the future, always make a copy of your old vuescan folder (directory) before you overwrite it. len@math.northwestern.edu
mendel_leisk
Current version is 7.6.76. Try upgrading to that. If that doesn't work, try deleting the entire directory and re-installing, and avoid using old "ini" files, if you do that. Check (before any of above?) "preview mem" setting in the prefs tab. Mine's on 80mb, the default. What happens if you preview at full res.?
stephen gallimore
From your description its a bit hard to tell what is going on, but there has been changes to the .ini file format recently and that could lead to weirdness (it did for me). Removing the .ini file and starting again is advisable, remember that if you are using WinXP the file is in your users documents and settings directory not the VueScan install directory. However remember that the preview and scan will be different because the preview defaults to using an exposure of 1.0, where the scan will use a calculated exposure based on the contents of the crop area. If you want to really preview the scan, you need to preview (default settings) -> set crop area -> activate input/lock exposure -> scanner/exposure (ctrl-X) -> preview again. Dont't forget to unselect input/lock exposure before previewing the next image. -stephen
steven_clark
I do have back versions 64, 69, 70, and 72 on file if you want 'em.
carl_pearson1
I am having the exact same problem, preview and scan are dramatically different. Also, negative frames do not line up correctly. I tried everything but it still doesn't capture the entire frame. I'm using 7.6.74 as well with a Nikon LS-5000. I'll try downloading the updated version....
