Vivitar 2800 (tilt no swivel) safe to use on EOS cameras??

Canon specifies no more than 6 volts from the flash. According to this site: http://www.botzilla.com/photo/strobeVolts.html the Vivitar 2800 has been tested at both 140 volts and 20 volts. It seems Vivitar changes the specs and sometimes recycles an old model number for a new flash unit. Anyway, it's too high unless yours happens to be lower. Which it might be. Easy to check it.

ALWAYS CHECK THE VOLTAGE YOURSELF if there is any doubt! This is very easy to do with a small multimeter that will cost you $5 or $10 at an electrical/electronics shop. Set it to VDC and measure the voltage accross the centre and ground pins. It is actually worth throwing the really high volt flashes away - to prevent any mistakes or maybe even dipping the whole shoe part in bright red paint :-)

As mentioned earlier 6 Volts is the recommended limit. I would not risk going over this. Older camera's - T90 work OK up to 8 Volts but I get edgy at anything that is over 6!
