Vintage cars amongst other things

Recommended Posts

Two weeks ago I loaded a roll of Agfa Superpan 200 in one of my leica IIIc cameras and screwed on the Xenon 50mm f/1.5.
It was a fine and sunny day so I took it for a walk around the city to snap some pictures. Most are from the park across from my old high school.
1. War monument (f/9 smallest aperture for the Xenon. Y1 filter. )

2. The park (contrast never was the Xenon's strong point. Y1 filter)

3. Shady lane (Y1 filter)

The following days I couldn't find much time to fill up the roll until a week ago. A fellow shutterbug and I went to a vintage car fair in the "Autotron" Vintage car museum in Rosmalen (NL).

While I was there I picked up a box with vintage lenses (2x Hermagis Objective Cinema 130mm, 1 Gasc & Charconnet petzval lens and one unknown petzval with variable aperture in rough shape) for a song.

To make the most out of the lens in the low indoor lighting I removed the yellow filter off the Xenon and replaced it with a vented lens hood.

4. Ford

8. Skoda (little too grainy to my taste)

9. Tyre-kickers

Despite the contrast issues, the Xenon is still growing on me. Until I get a Sonnar in LTM ;)

Classic cars shot with a classic camera. What could be better.

The DeSoto was probably brought over by a GI. When I was stationed in Germany in 1970 to 1972 gasoline was only 25c per gallon. Of course that price was only good at the military bases or along the autobahns.

Thanks for sharing.

Good series, Rick; I quite like the contrast gradient that the Xenon produces, in that it's easier to increase contrast in post-processing rather than attempting to reduce it. That De Soto is obviously a stand-out car, and my great-aunt drove a Skoda rather like the one featured. Mind you, she was an odd lady...

The Xenon may be a much maligned Leica lens but I love the look of these. I mean, if you have a vintage lens, then you want it to look vintage..right.
As Rick D has said, increasing the contrast in post when necessary is quite easy, getting that Leica glow is not.
I remember when Skoda cars were cheap and not cheerful...but now they are aspirational here in Australia.
