V750 noise comparison REDUX

Recommended Posts

After several recommendations to try VueScan and include it along side the

Epson and SilverFast comparisons, what began as a single crop to show the

shadow noise performance of the Epson V750 has now evolved into an

investigation of scanning platforms.

The Scans:
1. Epson single pass, unadjusted.
2. SilverFast: single pass
3. SilverFast: 4x MultiScan
4. SilverFast 8x
5. SilverFast 16x

6. VueScan, single pass
7. VueScan, 8x single pass multi-sampling
8. VueScan, Long exposure pass
9. VueScan, Long exposure + 8x multi-sampling
10. Imacon 848

Workflow:
Provia100F, Symmar-S 210mm
Scans were made at 48bit and 1600ppi except for the Imacon, which is at

900ppi. No scanning software adjustments were made. A curve like the one

on www.largeformatphotography.info/scan-comparison was applied to

the crops in PS to show shadow noise performance.

A few observations:
SilverFast (Ai studio) MultiScan is quite good at subtracting noise and

increasing shadow detail, but still softened fine image detail like pine

needles and the edges of small leaves in the full image - nothing remotely

noticeable in an 8x10, but would be cause for concern in much larger

prints.
I could see no shadow noise difference between a VueScan 10x and 16x pass.

VueScan Long Exposure is also very good at eliminating noise, but

intermittently returned slight artifacts (not uncommon) along lines of

contrast like a twig or plant shoot.
00IVx2-33073284.thumb.jpg.852f9aef573500653350d7f1a05e40c9.jpg

Thanks, this is a worthwhile comparison. It looks like #8 is the winner for maximizng detail and minimimzing noise and is closest to the 2 pass methods I use with my own scans.

If only Vuescan had a slighty better implementation of the long exposure past to improve alignment and blending... Email Ed if it's worthwhile to you as he improves features based on feedback.

SilverFast Multi-Exposure is far better than Multi-Sampling, even with only 2

scans

SilverFast 6.5 has the new patent-pending Multi-Exposure which adds a new dimension to

noise reduction and dynamic range increase!

Measurements according to ISO 21550 have shown a substantial increase in dynamic

range that have never been reached before with a software update and with that kind

of scanners (such as Epson Perfection V700, V750, Nikon Coolscan or Minolta

Dimage Scan Elite, more scanner supported are listed on LaserSoft Imaging's website

See the full explanation and measurements according to ISO 21550 here:
