Using photographic Emulsion on different materials...

Recommended Posts

Was wondering if anyone has any experience or knows anything about

photographic emulsion use. Mainly, instead of using regular manufactured photo

paper, buying the premade emulsion and coating different objects with it. Are

there a lot of fine art photographers out there doing this, I havent heard of

any, why not?

Also I know there is an upside and downside to everything, what would it be

for this?

Thanks for any help...

as Gareth said, Liquid Light is the stuff you are looking for. Fuji also sells a product called Art Emulsion here in Japan. For all I know, they amount to the same thing.

It comes in a bottle as a solid lump of geletin. You have to heat it up to about 40degC to make it flow and you then decant some out and coat whatever you want with it using a brush or whatever. You need to keep it warm (40degs or so) so that it goes on the surface smoothly. Of course, you can try making lumps and experiment with what that will do.

I was interested in it but it seemed too much of a bother. The heating up is not too much of a problem but leting the paper dry/cool down so you can use it obviously has to be done in a dark and dust free place which I do not have. People mention using cardboard boxes etc but I think I'll stick to normal silver geletin paper or go to platinum. Of course I won't be able to coat rocks and stuff then...
