ann_overland
I am wondering if it is possible to update firmware on an older camera with an USB 1.0 port via my PC's USB 2.0 ports?
denisgermain
I cannot think of ANY reason why it wouldn't work...
Plus most firmware updates can simply be copied onto your memory card (at least in the Canon world...)
Michael R Freeman
USB 2.0 ports are backwards compatible to USB 1.0, i.e. you can plug any USB 1.0 device into a USB 2.0 port and it will function correctly (at USB 1.0 speeds).

Maybe that's why they're called UNIVERSAL Serial Bus. ;-) >;)
(okay, probably not :-))
ann_overland
LOL...... thanks guys!

Do you normally just copy a firmware update to the memory card, or do you use the USB connection?
JosvanEekelen
See your owners manual. In case of Canon the new firmware has to be on the memory card, updating is done more or less automatically by the camera. Other brands may have a different approach. don_cooper
The Nikon firmware updates have a very detailed but simple process for performing the update. If you're updating a Nikon body be sure to get the procedure along with the files and follow it EXACTLY, no shortcuts.
ann_overland
I didn't know that, Don. Actually, I never had to update the D300 firmware. As long as it is working fine, I'll just use it as it is.

I've done this successfully with Nikon and Ricoh digital cameras.
