shoots
When I look at my 85mm 1.4 under the light at the right angle I see a uneven modeled coating on one of the inner elements. It looks like what you would see on a soap bubble. Or gas/oil on the surface of a puddle of water. I don't see this on any other lenses I own, but it is after all hard to see in the first place. Is this a defective coating? Has anyone else seen this type effect on their lens coatings?
aaron_ng
Did you just buy the lens brand new? I've seen the same problem on a late model AIS 50mm f/1.8. The coating on the inner side of the first element looked like the rainbow of a soap bubble. Probably it's Nikon's quality control problem. Ken Rockwell complained about dust and muck and imperfect polishing on samples of the AFS 80-200 while I myself had to go through 2 brand new AIS 105mm f/2.5 to get one without any fibre in the elements! Good thing the shop was patient because they had to order in the first lens, return it to Nikon in another country because I was unsatisfied and then get a 2nd unit for me. david enzel
Troy, How do your pictures look? I have the 85 1.4 and love it. There was a time when I would study new lenses intently for imperfections but I stopped. If I like the pictures I don't worry about it. I clean the lens as needed and shoot away. nate_merz1
Shouldnt affect image quality at all. Some of my lenses have little bubbles of uneven coating. Doesnt affect immage for me. Try it and find out.
