Underrated Photographers?

As we all know, there's a lot of amazing work by photographers who

are infrequently discussed here.

Here's an idea. I thought it might be fun and illuminating if

everyone picked a favorite. Someone who's less widely known or

discussed. It doesn't matter what genre. Provide a link (if one

exists) to their work.

So, which photographers, living or dead, do you think get too little

attention? Try to resist the urge to name yourself.

Here's one of mine, but I have many:

Although I don't think he used a Leica (I could be wrong), much of

Max Yavno's (1911-1985) work falls into the genre of street

photography. I've seen a lot of his prints and I'm lucky enough to

have one. They're gorgeous with details lurking in the shadows that

always amaze me.

If you're not familiar with Yavno's work, check out this slide show:

I would say David Hurn. True, he's a Magnum photographer, so maybe not as underrated as some. But he doesn't get mentioned much. His book "Wales: Land of My Father" is a wonderful photo essay on Wales. And his book "On Being a Photographer" with Bill Jay is one of the best photography "text" books ever, in my opinion.

No doubt in my mind: Kathleen Laraia McLaughlin who sold her house and everything else and moved to Romania to live and photograph peasants in small villages in northern Romania. Her works can be seen at: www.leafpile.com

When it is suggested that someone or something is "underrated" the question then arises, by what standard or criteria was the rating made and who did the rating? Then the next question is, by whose judgement was the underrating determined. It is understandable that many deserving may appear to be unappreciated by the media or the public but unless the judging audience and the paradigm are defined, how can any rational conclusion be rendered?

I will second Josh's nomination and add my own from the Magnum line-up:

Trent Parke. He makes street photography interesting again. Also, Lauren

Greenfield of the VII photo agency did a great job with Girl Culture. She has

other intriguing essays on the VII website.

Good thread.

The British photographer Richard Billingham, his book "Ray's A

Laugh" (published by Scalo) is as moving and loving a body of

work as you could hope to see. Whilst he isn't underrated by the

art world he's been largely condemned by the

photo-fundamentalists for deviating from established norms.

Lise Sarfati, a French woman with Magnum but still largely

unknown. One of the few reportage photographers working today

with a truly none-derivative style, and, not that it matters, she

works with Leicas and Kodachrome.

I would of course like to mention a Swedish photographer. Since I think that Christer Strömholm and Lennart Nilsson are already well known internationally, why not mention Georg Oddner? He has received a lot of well deserved attention in Sweden recently. Some of his pics can be seen here.
Jake, you don't need to patronize me. I am aware that there are commendable photographs posted on this page everyday, and also there are many that are not so commendable. However, the fact that they represent someone's honest efforts is most commendable. Lacking any viable criteria I will then suggest that all those who have put forth the effort to display their work here are to be recognized as contributing to the improvement of calling. Nuf Sed?
