seanb
There's quite a few of us. I'm about thirty miles outside of London.

My gear has come from a combination of Jessops, Photo Optix and Jacobs which are all high street chains. Another option for online shopping is Warehouse Express. A word of warning about Jessops - they have more shops than the others and the service quality can vary tremendously between stores (and even from between assistants in a store). I would also shop around for prices; they are not always price competitive. Their main advantage is convenience.

I've never actually used Robert White, but they have a very good reputation. For second hand gear, try FFordes.

For film, digital cards, batteries, ink jet supplies and other smallish items, the cheapest option is usually the Channel Island online retailers such as MX2 or 7 Day Shop. They are cheap due to a loophole in UK VAT (sales tax) laws - they don't have to charge the 17.5% tax that onshore retailers do.

I'm sure other people will chip in with more suggestions. max g.
I live in Brighton, not too far from london ither. Thanks allot, great help, only thing i found with jessops is that they are quit expenssive, most of the American online stores had cheaper prices. But thanks again. Max G. John Seaman
Max Amateur Photographer magazine is a useful souce of equipment suppliers. Camera fairs are advertised in their small ads. I use Jessops quite a lot , although with the benefit of living in their "home" city. They do a good deal on used kit with good value extended warranties and exchange policy. Brian
Hi Max, I'm just along the coast in Chichester. I agree with the previous poster that 7dayshop is the place for film and inkjet supplies - their prices are much much less than the mainland, more than just the difference in VAT.

I don't buy much new gear, but for used, online, Ffordes is probably the best. Also Mifsuds are reliable and frequently discount all their used manual focus equipment. Don't forget eBay as well.

I don't have good experience with Jessops. I find the prices high and the service indifferent.
rob_davidson
Hi Max - If your looking for equipment, I think the cheapest place is from www.warehouseexpress.com - they have some real bargains For consumables, 7dayshop is excellent. richard_milner2
I'm a UK photographer. I have bought stuff from the following places: Jessops New Oxford Street medium format department (downstairs. You have to bargain but they will basically price match Robert White and add £10 (he adds £10 postage). Then offer to pay by Switch instead of credit card. This saves a lot of fees and they take the £10 off. You can check the item immediately and walk away with it. Do check before you leave; I bought a lens there and the wrong one was in the box. Cambridge Camera - they are nothing to do with the US outfit. Reliable on their condition descriptions. I have bought two lenses from them. They do not have a web site. Mifsuds - Very good service on two items I bought there. Some very good prices on new equipment such as Bronica. Also have a second hand department. Aperture Photographic - Rather a jolly outfit run from beneath a small cafe by a Chinese guy and his sidekick. They are best for Nikon kit, especially second hand. Robert White is highly recommended by many Photo.net users but I have not personally bought from them. You can find them all in Amateur Photog. nocontenthere
Photoglossy.com is excellent for film, digi media, inkjet media and paper. Theyre also very good on price and I've never had a problem with their slide film. I've bought approx 100 Fuji rvp films during this last hot summer with no complaints. They tend to be pretty good on delivery and because theyre in Guernsey there's no VAT to pay either.
nocontenthere
Also forgot to mention if you're buying photo equipment, especially digital don't forget to check amazon.co.uk. If they have it in stock the price will be hard to beat. I found my Nikon coolpix 4300 this way and got Jessops to price match - they knocked a further £70 off their already discounted price!
