Tri-x packaging

Recommended Posts

With factory rolled 35mm tri-x I've come to distinguish easily

between new and old (within the last couple weeks I've ended up

buying both from different stores). But I just bought some bulk film

from adorama, and I can't tell if its old or new. The expiration

date 01/05, the cat# isn't listed under any kodak publications I've

seen, and the TX402 spec isn't enough to distinguish. I just looked

on ebay and saw some tri-x 35mm 36ex rolls that have the same

expiration date, BUT their cat# is listed by kodak as the old stuff.

So now I'm at a loss. I wanted the new stuff because I want to test

the development times. Anyone know? TIA, Eric

The "new" versions of Kodak's B&W pre-rolled 35 mm film is packaged with the word "Kodak" printed in red. The previous versions had "Kodak" printed a different colour (I think it was either black or yellow).

The bulk film is likely labeled in a similar manner.

It appears that you've got the new stuff based on the colour scheme, although I cannot confirm it. You'll be quite safe to assume you've got the new stuff when doing your developing tests since the developing times for new and old are quite close. The final proof is in the negative edge numbering. The new stuff is marked 400TX, the old is marked 5063 TX.

And the answer to our last quiz is A,A,D,B,A, and No it isn't the new stuff. Do we have a winner? Oh I'm sorry, when it comes to Kodak, nobody's a winner. Well stay tuned to the Tri-X fiasco network for our next installment when we figure out the 400TX/HC-110 screw-up with test strips. See y'all next time, bye now.
