Traditional Palaces

I spent the early months of 1974 at field work in the Nupe Emirate in Nigeria. Before going into the countryside, I met first with the District Governor who arranged an audience with the Etsu Nupe, the Emir of Bida. The meeting was held in the old, traditional palace in town, which I picture here. After some initial confusion about why anyone wanted to find old archaeological sites, the Emir graciously granted permission and provided me with an official to introduce me in the local communities.

This was shortly after the end of the Civil War. I see from some Google searches that things in Bida have been 'spiffed up' since I was there.
