I remember, when I used to live in NC, downtown Raleigh had an exhibition space which anyone could rent out for an evening for very cheap. One of my friends once put up a photo exhibition there. And there was Sam Bass Camera and their used equipment sale. Here is the very first test photo I took after I bought a 50/1.8 lens from there.

I think for many of us, it is a curiosity, that first photo we take with a new lens: for me it is.

The last lens I bought was a 14/2.8 - I unpacked it in the car and took a photo of the car's instrument panel - then one out the window of the building across the road. For me it was about just "using it", more than anything else.

It was my first prime lens (that was 2004). I was teaching myself perspective and composition, and the architectural shot seemed like a nice exercise. Personally, I try to make the first photo with a new equipment memorable, by shooting a subject that utilizes the benefits of the new equipment. For instance, I could not shoot the above photo, if I didn't have the 1.8 aperture, because the light was too dim.
