The Miniature Effect - a Beginner/Intermediate level PS Tutorial

Recommended Posts

Over the last month or so I have received a number of emails and comments expressing interest in the Tilt/Shift post-processing technique to produce images that appear as if they are of models or miniature sets.

It has taken me a little while to get my thoughts together but as promised I have (finally) completed my tutorial on the Miniature Effect and posted it to my blog.

It can be found at:

ps.

This is my first tutorial so I would appreciate any feedback and suggestions for improvement. In particular, I tried to aim the tutorial at the beginner to intermediate level and I would love to know if I got it right or wrong.

00UISI-167287784.jpg.298865d9bef6aef87ccf7c7027d6d006.jpg

Very approachable, well-balanced stuff, Mike.

The only thing I'd consider adding would be some strategic pointers that will help people to think about this technique in advance, at the time they're choosing their subject and composing the shot. Some scenes lend themselves this better than others, and since you've applied it well to a number of subjects (I recall your recent train station project), it might help to add one more page that comments on your thought process at the time you're shooting.

Thanks Matt for your well thought out suggestion – I think adding a section on the application of the tilt/shift simulation technique to real world scenes, with an emphasis on subject selection and composition, would definitely complement the technical flavour of the tutorial. I’ll have to work hard on it though; I’m sure adding just one or two pages of creative content will take me at least twice as long as the 10 pages of purely method based instructions – I am an engineer after all!

Thanks again, much appreciated.
