stefantveye
I've become curious to know how old my Pentax K1000 is. I've been searching and searching the internet to see if there is some kind of serial number guide to correspond to the year in which it was manufactured. No luck! I don't suppose anyone knows how to tell the age of a K1000 using the serial number? Any help is much apprecitated.
rickvivian
Stefan, here's a quote from a Pentax user forum in the UK where a similar question was asked.

"Thank you for contacting Pentax Imaging Company.
The 7-digit serial number serves to identify the camera as a unit only, but does not provide information regarding date or place of manufacture.
The ME Super was manufactured from 1979-1985, however.
If you have further questions, please feel free to contact our Customer Service Department at: 800-877-0155
Thanks again,
Joe Virgil
Pentax Imaging Company "
stefantveye
Thanks Rick for the quote. This is quite helpful. I was hoping for some kind of code...but, oh well. I know mine was made sometime near the late 1980s. I'm also looking to buy a second K1000 and was hoping to identify the ones made in Japan vs. the later ones made in China. derek_heeps
Stefan , don't overlook the KM which is effectively the same camera but also has DOF preview and self timer .
stefantveye
Thanks for the suggestion Derek. I don't think I would have ever considered that model as being something similar (as I don't know much about that model). I'll do a little searching for one of those, at least to have a look at it.
