That "fiesty bunch of guys $5000 camera" thing...your chance to change it

Discussion in 'Leica and Rangefinders' started by joshroot, May 5, 2009.

  1. Yeah, yeah. Phil's joke was a bad one and nobody liked it. So it's finally going to get changed.
What do you want it to be? Needs to be a short, 1-2 sentence description. Here's what I was going to go with:
Leica M, LTM, and R systems along with any other rangefinder camera out there. MF and LF rangefinders would be on topic, but might be best asked in the MF or LF forums.
But I figured since I was already getting flack for something that was done years ago by someone else, I might as well stay in the flack-pile and ask for opinions.
Here's your chance. Be quick about it. This file is a pain to edit and I'm not going to do it over and over.

  2. Leica and rangefinder forum. Dedicated to continuing and advancing the art and practice of Leica and Rangefinder photography tools, techniques, and practices.

  3. I like Ricky Eng's version.

  4. "Leica and Rangefinders Forum: Discussing rangefinder cameras and lenses and exhibiting the photos they take. Leica M and LTM cameras, lenses, and accessories are the main focus, but discussion of non-Leica, medium-format, and other rangefinders as well as non-rangefinder Leicas is also welcome."

  5. Bob, slightly too wordy for the hover bubbles on the "community page". Ricky's is more along the right lines for length.

  6. Another vote for Ricky's version!

    Yep, Ricky's is good.

  8. Cut and paste Ricky's.

  9. I vote for Josh's version, since it is not quite so "Leica-centric".
I figure I get a vote here because of my super rare golden and rosewood Swedish military Leica that somehow made it to Kiev.
I confess that I liked Phil's version, seemed to counter the tendency of all of us to get too serious about subjects that should be fun. So it's not exactly true that "nobody" liked it, but then again......

  10. "We got rid of Tony and Mike- now go F--k yourselves"
sorry couldn't resist- a heartfelt thanks to Josh for being proactive in all of this. Rickys is good

  11. Why would you put medium format range finder cameras in medium format - simply because of the film size? There's more in common in using a MF range finder with using 35mm format range finder than with a MF SLR. Having used MF range finders for nearly 30 years, I can tell you from first hand use, they have NOTHING in common with my other medium format camera (Hasselblad) - other than film size.
Also, where do you see the S2 system going when it becomes available later this year - Leica or medium format?

  12. I wouldn't change it at all. Sometimes the truth hurts, but it's still the truth!
"Leica and rangefinder forum. Feel free to lurk all you want, but posting a question will be akin to your skating in roller derby without pads or helmet. Have a nice day, but have it in some other place."

That's why I said "might" in my sample. I'm trying to not be hard and fast here without being nitpicky. We just need a nice general statement. Nobody kicks Mamiya 7 questions out of the MF forum. Some questions just work better some places. It isn't always about what is the best organization, neither is better in this case for organization, sometimes it's about where a user can find the best answers to their question. And the reality is that someone may find more people using a MF/LF RF on the MF or LF forums. As evidenced by the 700+ Mamiya 6/7 posts linked above.
S2 could go any number of places, digital, Leica, MF. Probably not LF as that is mostly old school LF gear. When they talk didigtal, it's digital backs.

  14. "Yeah, yeah. Phil's joke was a bad one and nobody liked it"
Not true..there are some people who liked it a lot. I do...but I understand why many may not. IMO it is just a little too close to the truth for some...

  15. I think the problem was that things weren't consistent. if every forum had been given funny/teasing descriptions, it would have been a clever theme. But it was inconsistent and so some people felt crapped upon.

  16. Then I'd try to make it as generic as possible:
Discuss all Leica equipment; and other manufacturers' rangefinder cameras and lenses of all formats.

  17. No problem posting MF rangefinder questions in the Leica and Rangefinder or the Medium Format forum. The final determinant will be the quality of the forum exchanges.
Most of the Mamiya 6 and 7 discussions currently take place on the Medium Format forum. This might change in the future if more MF/LF RF users find useful exchanges here.

  18. "That 'feisty bunch of guys $5000 camera' thing... your chance to change it"

It's about bloody time! A more accurate statement would read something like -
"A feisty bunch whose overpriced cameras outperform their photographic abilities..."

All joking aside, I like Ricky's version too...

    Another vote for Ricky's.

  20. Alright, I'm going to go with Ricky's as that seems to be the general consensus.

  21. Sometimes a thing is just right, first crack out of the barrel. I doubt Ricky's could be improved. I might even re-subscribe now.

  22. I think the problem was that things weren't consistent. if every forum had been given funny/teasing descriptions, it would have been a clever theme.
There is a more complicated, but more entertaining, option then. Make all of the descriptions like the old Leica/RF one.
Canon EOS - a bunch of guys* like Capt Ahab, still looking for Moby Dick...
Nikon - a bunch of guys wondering what happened after 1986
Canon FD - A bunch of guys for whom nothing has happened after 1986
    and so on.
*I include our women participants as being one of the guys, of course.

  23. I thought about it JDM, but I just decided that it wasn't worth the battles I would have to fight over it with people who didn't get it. It's one thing to put up with something silly that has been here for years, it's another to open up a new can of worms when I could be working on more important projects.
So I'm going to save my cleverness for other stuff.

  24. This file is a pain to edit and I'm not going to do it over and over.
Oops, sorry about that one, I sure hope it wasn't my single post in the other thread that ignited all this " fiesty bunch of guys $5000 camera" thing changing. I just thought it was too funny in context of the thread, being discussed in a forum to which the summarized description was laughing in the face of both sides that where discussing to such ' dramatic heights ' in that thread. To be honest, it doesn't bother me at all, even if I would post here a lot... I'm fiesty, I'm a guy, I have a 5000$ camera and I wonder constantly about what makes a good photo !

  25. I do not think "fiesty " in the description would have made anyone avoid the forum.
It was feisty and that makes a big difference!

  26. Ah, it even says fiesty in this thread title. Well, my mac dictionary says that feisty can simply mean strongly determined. Hardly shocking....

  27. Yeah, Josh, I take your point, but it's still a shame. Some of us are kinda feisty (aka fiesty) all the same.
Whatever, let's not make the Leica part of "Leica/RF" get too overwhelming, though.

    khi

don't forget to add: "and forum for certain Canon digital camera users who are special" :)

  29. Try:
Dedicated to Leica M and LTM cameras and other rangefinders, as well as Leica's film and digital SLR systems.

  30. Or:
An eclectic forum dedicated to all thing Leica, and rangefinder cameras too.

  31. A forum for Leica M, LTM, and all other rangefinders, plus Leica's film and digital SLRs. Dedicated to continuing and advancing the art and practice of Leica and Rangefinder photography tools, techniques, and practices.
What about this? There really is no reason to say "Leica and Rangefinder forum" in the beginning of the description, as people will be hovering over the words "Leica & Rangefinder forum" in order to make that description pop up. So I took that part out and replaced it with a version of Alex's sentence. Not totally grammatically correct, but I'm not a stickler for that sort of thing in this particular instance.

  32. Works for me, Josh.

  33. For now, I went with the description above.
    http://www.photo.net/community/

  34. Looks pretty good. "...practice..." and "...practices." sounds a little repetitive, but otherwise I think it delivers the message well. If you go back in there maybe something like...
A forum for Leica M, LTM, and all other rangefinders, plus Leica's film and digital SLRs. Dedicated to continuing and advancing Leica and Rangefinder photography tools, techniques, art, and practices.

  35. I like it Josh. Go for it.

  36. Shouldn't be too wordy. Feisty is fun. It just shouldn' be rude. Ricky Eng's is closest. Keep it simple. How about:
Leica and rangefinder forum. Informative and sometimes feisty discussion on all aspects of Leica and rangefinder photography.

  37. Josh, just a slight revision. Try this: "A forum for Leica M, LTM, and all other rangefinders, plus Leica's film and digital SLRs. Dedicated to continuing and advancing the art and practice of Leica and Rangefinder photography." Cut "tools, techniques, and practices," (redundant, if you look closely) and you have it! Perfection!

  38. I suggest, "A forum for witty, intelligent, and charming folk who are passionate about shooting with the best damn camera in the whole wide world. But you're also welcome . . ."

  39. Dull, dull, dull. Guaranteed to condemn this forum to conventionality. I'm for Mike Dixon's version, only substitute 'humane but feisty ' for 'and charming '.
I appreciate how frustrating it must be for a tidy-minded moderator to have a disparate set of forums, but let's face it, some of them work and some don't. This Leica forum used to be a lively place, but recently it has really been struggling. Please don't kill it off.

  40. I love the original. It is too close to the truth for some, but come on folks: where's your sense of humour?
    Cheers
    Alan

  41. Friends, you know what happens when you hear the same joke over and over? :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) Well, it's time for at least a fresh joke. Or something utilitarian, which lasts longer.

  42. I'll make the change to alex's last version at some point today and call it good.

  43. Jonathan,
It's just a small description located on a page listing every forum on this site. It needs to be accurate and informative. Jokes don't help new users find where to go to get their questions asked. The place for being clever and interesting is on the forum itself, not on a page like http://www.photo.net/community/

    I like it. Thanks, Josh.

  45. Here's what I went with:
A forum for Leica M, LTM, Voigtlander, Ziess, Contax, FED and ALL other rangefinders, plus Leica's film and digital SLRs. Dedicated to continuing and advancing the art and practice of Leica and Rangefinder photography.
Replaces the "tools, techniques, and practices," and presents a list that makes the breadth of the forum more obvious. Unless anyone has a good reason why that won't work, I think I'm onto other projects (particularly since I already broke that page by screwing with it yesterday).

  46. Hey, I like the specific mention of non-Leica RFs. Doesn't sound like the others are just "poor relations".
And thanks for throwing in FED, that's sweet for those of us who love these cranky old "Leicas" made under actually-existing socialist production. Only mention of Kievs would make it sweeter ;)

  47. Rangefinder Forum
    Make it the big tent

  48. A forum for Leica M, LTM, Voigtlander, Ziess, Contax, FED and ALL other rangefinders, plus Leica's film and digital SLRs. Dedicated to continuing and advancing the art and practice of Leica and Rangefinder photography.
Josh, Please ask someone to proof read it for you before you replace it again.
It should be Zeiss and not Ziess.

  49. hooray for typos. Comes from having too much to do and trying to do it all.

  50. Looks fine to me, but it all seems a tempest in a teapot anyways, didn't see a need for any change.

It's just for the record, and I confess that I love Leicas, but themost I have paid for one so far, an M3 with an f2.8/90mm Elmarit, is $350. My i(c) got at a flea market for $35. And my iiif I got at Central Camera in Chicago for $250. I love them all.

  52. Thanks, Josh! Good going!

  53. Leica is not just rangefinders. Consider both the S2 and the Digilux 2 and 3, especially since many people use Leica R lenses on the Digilux 3, and the Digilux 2 has quite a following. Plenty of people still use the R system. Leica D system lenses are used on other 4/3 cameras, giving the purported "glow" on e.g. Olympus systems.
On the other hand, there are more rangefinders than Leicas. Epson and Contax users may be niches, but they seem to love their equipment.
    Maybe split the forums?

  54. Anyway, the deed is done--not just on this forum but on others as well. Good work, Josh.
I think the Leica / RF forum is fine as it is.

  55. I love it. It covers everything. Now if only we could have our exclusive FS threads back! Plus a yearly draw for a new M8{:>=)
In & of itself the old slogan was bearable, but since it seemed to echo the sentiments of visiting trolls, it encouraged the suspicion that the site itself looked down on Leica-istas. We may be feisty, or (as Josh would say, fiesty), but we are also terribly sensitive .

  56. I like Phil's joke, and I've got three Leicas. Everyone knows you can get a great picture with an Instamatic. The equipment doesn't matter, knowing how to use it and having a good eye does. I'm not sensitive. For those who are, how about just calling it "rangefinder cameras" and letting those with MF rangefinders post in either the MF or the RF forums?

  57. Folks, it is what it's going to be for the foreseeable future. I'm onto other projects.

  58. I like that old joke better:)

  59. "A forum for Leica M, LTM, digital and all other rangefinders. Dedicated to advancing Rangefinder photography tools, techniques, art, and practices."
