johannes_gerber
Hi everyone, I need some advice, I do mostly nature and wildlife shooting.I bought a 2x tele-converter today at a secondhand shop but left the lens that was with it.I do some climbing as well and need the cam bag to be as light as possible. Would you advise using a 90-230mm/f4.5 zoom lense with a 2x tele-converter?It's the old m42 screw type. Sigma. Does this mean that the lens will be 180-460mm with the converter? That will enable me to carry only the one lens + tele converter. ThanksJG
art_haykin
A 2x converter doubles the focal length of the lens, so 180-460 is correct. It also costs you TWO stops and will magnify any optical flaws in any given lens. The only way to find out is to test it at all f/stops, zoom ranges, and various distances. Brian
I agree with Art that you need to test the combination. Some combinations of TC plus lens work well, some don't. You can be sure without testing that your maximum aperture will be about f9, which you may find restrictive. I don't use TCs with my zooms (which are around f3.5 to f4.5) because of this problem.
