pico_digoliardi
I got a Schneider Symmar 5.6/180mm multicoated in-shutter as a part of package of stuff. I do not plan to use it because I have a good 150mm. Any opinions on this lens? Is it worth a few bucks?
steve_hamley
Best way is to check eBay completed auctions. That will tell you what people are willing to pay. You can expect a few bucks less from a dealer, unless maybe in trade. Steve
pico_digoliardi
Thanks for that. It appears not to be so popular, maybe worth $150US. It should cover 5x7, and 4x5 with a lot of movement. So be it. Oh, I also got a Planar 135mm F3.5 in the lot. Dunno. I might put it on that evilbay place. Man, I just got to get rid of all this STUFF!
big toys are better
Later version of that covered 5x7 quite well; I have an -S version which is quite valuable for me since I shoot both 4x5 and 5x7 using a 5x7 field camera. 5x7 may be enjoying something of a resurgance in popularity so eBay is the place to start. pico_digoliardi
It is the "S" (and multi-coated) version. I appreciate the information. Thank you, Sir. I'll put it up tomorrow.
profhlynnjones
Hi Pico, New equivalent Schneider lenses in the US run form $1,000 to $1,500! Used 180mm Symmar S, MC sell for $350 to $450. Lynn
larry n.
"Thanks for that. It appears not to be so popular, maybe worth $150US" Are you sure about that? That seems way too cheap for a Schneider multicoated lens that can cover 5x7! Are you looking at completed auction for specimens in good shape? big toys are better
The Schneider "S" series is all MC, and the 180mm used to go for between $300-$500 "used" in VG-Exc. condition. Hard to find since it was not popular with 4x5, but I find it quite useful. The Nikon was in the late 1980s and 1990's a bit better choice as far as price and stated coverage goes, but newer German "Apo" glass improved stated coverage, and they were always quite conservative on the claims anyways. michael_briggs2
"The Schneider "S" series is all MC,.." -- not according to Schneider -- see http://www.schneideroptics.com/info/faq/photography.htm#q8 -- Schneider started multicoating their lenses in midst of the Symmar-S series, focal length by focal length, in 1977 and 1978. But it's very easy to tell, as stated in the next answer in the FAQ -- all Schneider multicoated lenses are labeled.
big toys are better
I must have missed that since the "S" series isn't really that old and many intermediate lenses were MC. Is there a particular set or focal length of the older "S" lineage that aren't MC? However, you are correct since the lenses are marked MC and it's quite obvious looking at the glass elements.
