steve_vancosin
Subject line says it all. Any recommendations or issues of which I should be aware?
arnabdas
I have gotten excellent results with 200mm/f4 AF Micro Nikkor + Tamron SP AF 1.4x 7e teleconverter. Not sure if it would preserve VR (I heard it does) -- it should match great with that zoom of yours, too. I think the Kenko Pro 1.4 teleconverter is essentially an identical design wrt Tamron and that should match well, too.
arnabdas
I think the Tamron 1.4x multiplier is 5 element, and *not* 7 element as I said above.
ShunCheung
Nikon's own TC-14E II is the obvious answer for a 1.4x TC. Is there any reason why you may be considering alternatives? For a 2x TC, there is the TC-20E II, but it has the drawbacks of all 2x TCs. And there will be the up-coming TC-17E II for 1.7x.
robert_friedlander
I have the TC-20EII and have been happy with it, it yeilds a 600 f/5.6 on my D100 while still preserving the VR. As long as u have enough light its a very good sharp combo. Robert
Mary Doo
The Kenko Pro 300 series are excellent. However, according to comparison reports, the Nikon TCs for AFs do have a slight edge over the Kenko Pros. Also, be aware that Nikon TC-14e II and TC-20e II are only compatible with certain AFS lenses such as the VRs, whereas the Kenko Pros are more generically applicable.

This link has some interesting observations on the 70-200 and the TCs: http://www.camerahobby.com/Review-70-200mmVR.htm
ShunCheung
The TC-14E and 20E are optimized for long lenses and are compatible with all AF-S lenses from 70-200mm VR, 80-200mm, and everything else from 300mm and up. They are only not compatible with short lenses such as the 28-70, 17-35, etc., but there is no point to use TCs on those lenses to begin with.
