wen_yao_li
I wonder if anyone has experience with submitting photo to Audubon calendar. I have a couple of images used by Audubon in their 1999 calendar. I have received the paycheck several months ago but have not got my slides back yet. Because this is the first time I submitted my work for publication. I don't know if this is normal. Should I try to contact them? Also for those of you who submit your work to Audubon for year 2000 calendars, have you received your rejected slides back?
Thanks, Wen-yao Li
drc
Congratulations, i have'nt had any experience with Audobon, but i would not worry too much about it, i believe they are great to deal with. A fair number of publications that i deal with don't usually send used slides back right away, they are probably busy and/or their policy is to send them back at a future date . don_baccus
First of all, congratulations at hitting Audubon's calendar on your first try at submitting work for publication. I'm impressed.
At this point, I'd contact them, they are done with the slides. If you live outside the states as I suspect, I would not want to risk learning a few months from now that they were shipped, say, in September, and then lost by the shipping company. Don't demand that they return them, just politely ask "what is your schedule for returning slides, so I'll know when to worry?".
Most of the magazines I have worked with send checks and slides at roughly the same time, but the calendar may very well be different due to the extremely long lead-time involved.
Again, congratulations. This is a very competitive venue, and part of me says "hell, why do you care if you get the slides back?" because you scored so well, but the rational part of me realizes that their appearance in the Audubon calendar means that your name and shots will register in the minds of a least some photo editors working with bird images, and you will have further opportunities to sell these images. m._huber
I haven't dealt with Audaubon, but I do know from ezperience a little prodding/checking doesn't hurt. Usually they are most apologetic about not getting back to you -not that that means they return your material any faster. They might be very busy; they might have lost your SASP. I had an experience where the magaizine and I had monthly exchanges (we got to be on a first-name basis) because they wanted to keep my slide for future use, and I wanted it back. When I fianally got most insistent, they had to look for it in such a special place they could'nt find it for awhile. The caveat was that they knew my name and voice so well, I had sort of an "in" and they put put me on their "pictures wanted list."
