Stroborame and Vivitar 283

Gary-

1. You needs to connect the flash to the camera one way or another; so you will need to use either a dedicated sync cord or a pc cord, the pc cord attaching to the hot shoe adapter. The dedicated sync cord acts as a PC cord- you won't need to use the dedicated sync cord AND a PC cord- its one or the other.

2. Prior to TTL flash metering, I used Vivitar 283s, 285s, 3500s, 3700s, 4600s and the handle mount Vivitar 385s and 3900s. The dedicated sync cords provide the most solid connections with any of these flashes both at the camera and the flash.

3. Most importantly, the dedicated sync cord for the 283 keeps the flash sensor in a constant optimal position above the lens in the flash shoe. The constant position of the flash sensor, even with the flash moving to different positions around the camera as the bracket is articulated, affords the best flash metering for these thyristor flashes.

This can be important with a bracket like the Quick Flip 35 that will not take anti-twist plates. The flash can get a little out of alignment with the camera and may not provide accurate metering when used with a PC cord if the flash and sensor are at an angle to the camera.

Finally, I would note that thes cords can be found at reasonable prices on ebay:

the simpler cable i'm suggesting is the 12 inch pc-1 (it is normally supplied with the

flash unit).

it works well with a quickflip, 283, and 645 camera.

eric's method will work, but i think you'll curse the length of cable hanging from your

rig. i can't see the advantage of moving the sensor a few inches from the flash unit to

the hotshoe (if your quickflip is twisting, then you have a fundamental problem with

subject coverage).
