Sticky shutter button on Yashica Electro

Recommended Posts

I recently acquired a Yashica Electro GSN from Ebay, and it seems to

be in perfect working order (I'm getting the film back today) except

for one rather annoying thing. It appears that some sort of sticky

gunk has worked its way into the shutter button, making it stick

slightly when pressed all the way down. The sticking isn't strong

enough to actually hold the button down, but it's just enough to

make it annoying. I also have to press the button rather hard to get

the shutter to fire. I was wondering how to take apart the top part

of the camera in order to get at the offending part and clean it.

What specific tool(s) do I need for this, and is there anything

special I should know before attempting this fix (warnings, for

example)?

Just in case anybody reads this again, I found out from the Yashica Guy's website that my problem is caused by the so-called "Pad of Death." It's made from some 70's plastic or something, and now the plasticizer is coming out of it as it decomposes, and is making it really sticky. Actually, I accidentally destroyed the pad (it had become quite fragile), and now the camera only has shutter speeds of 1/500 and forever, depending on where the aperture ring is set. Fortunately, the Yashica Guy explains how to replace the Pad of Death on his site, so I'll give it a try using the disassembly guide supplied above.
