Stepped into the FX world, with a D700

After some back and fourth I decided to look for a used D700. I finally found one that I was able to purchase for a reasonable price with only 27,1xx cliicks. The great thing aside from how well this camera preforms is that I can use the batteries from my D200. Here are some test shots!

Enjoy!
The newer cameras may do things better, but the D700 still makes a great camera, a very well-rounded package that creates extremely nice files (and with the right software, raw files that offer a lot room to play - Nikon's own software blows the reds too fast, though).
My D700 is from the last production batches, and so far I still cannot find a reason to trade up. I am convinced the D810 is a better camera in many many ways, just not "extra good enough" to make me part with any money, and that's mainly because the D700 doesn't drop the ball in any serious way.

(As much as I love my D700, it is not "among the last of the Nikon highly weather-sealed, all-metal bodied cameras".... The D800, D810 have the same construction - it's not a last of the mohicans.)

Thanks for the encouragement and kind words. I need to make time to really put my D700 thru it's paces.

Chip, I still have my D200, last year picked up a D7100 which I'm happy with, but couldn't scratch the itch of FX. The first thing I'm noticing is the boken on the D700, to me it seems much smoother and pleasing, but I'll need to run some more tests. I'm considering selling my D7100 as I plan on moving my D700 to primary status.

Another itch I can't seem to scratch is the new Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 VR II. If I sell my D7100 for $700, and sell my Nikon 80-200mm f2.8 for another $700 I'm very well within reach. But that's whole other story. hahahah

Lorne,
You are right, I had time this evening to mount my Nikon 80-200mm f2.8 on my D700 and I'm amazed how good these images are. I just picked up this lens second had about a month ago, tired it on my D7100, it was ok at f2.8 but it's now fantastic on my D700 @ 80mm. I think I need to step back while zoomed all the way to 200mm for sharp focus when standing infront of my subject. But again I'm still learning the quirks of this lens.

@200mm f2.8 (here's where I think I need to move back a bit and refocus)

Manuel,
It's a relatively frequent complaint with the AF-D 80-200 f/2.8 to have focus issues at 200mm at close distances (approx. <5m distance); I know mine suffered that quite badly (or probably still, but I sold it some time ago) - it would just never really focus correctly under those specific circumstances. Zoom out a little, or increase the distance to the subject, and it's solved. Annoying little thing, but quite easy to work around. Otherwise, yes, this lens is very nice on a D700 :-)

Wouter,

Thanks for the clarification, that's what I figured.

Rodeo,
Had my 80-200mm f2.8 not preformed this well on my d700 I'd be leaning toward the 70-200mm f2.8 VR II. These are more "getting to know" the lens test shots, and I haven't ruled the 70-200mm f2.8 VRII out just yet.

Congratulations !

Me, I own a D700. I then upgraded (or downgraded?) to a D600, then shortly traded the latter for a D800.

All I can say is this: while the D800's higher dynamics and pixel count make it a better camera (I never have to worry about exposure anymore: as long as the sun isn't in the frame the whole scene almost always fit the histogram without trouble), I could never sell my D700 because, in normal conditions (= not in the complete dark), it has the most beautiful, most natural picture texture imho. "Picture texture" is hard to quantify: I just mean the D700's pictures feel as natural as film, while the D600 and D800's, though excellent too, have a slightly more electronic feel. This is very subtle though.
