tylerwind
I have a Rebel XT and just got a new computer with Vista. I loaded my old Canon software (Utility, Zoombrowser, etc.) in order to be able to transfer my images. I then went to the Canon site and downloaded some updates that were supposed to allow me to transfer on a Vista computer. However, I cannot get the images to transfer. When I plug in the camera it brings up an option window with "Transfer using windows", "Transfer Using Canon Utility," etc. I have tried them all and cannot get it to connect. Does anyone know exactly which update I need? I think my original CD is version 11.1 which has Zoombrowser 5.5, EOS Capture 1.5, etc. Is there another program I can use? I don't have a CF card reader--I've always plugged the camera in and loaded images directly. Any help is greatly appreciated!
m_barbu1
I don't remember the menu combination to get to this, but your user manual should tell you. I believe there is a communications mode that you can toggle from PTP to something else. Toggle it and see what that does.

bobatkins
Even if you do figure it out, I'd still get a card reader. They're dirt cheap and generally just work without complaint.
john v.
It's been said on these forums many times, but get a card reader. You'll find transferring images from a card reader to a computer much easier than using the camera manufacturer's supplied software. This is true regardless of what computer operating system you may be using.
tylerwind
Bob and John--Thanks for the input. I'm going to take your advice and get one. Any particulars I need to look for in a good card reader? In the meantime I'll still take any tips to make things work until I get one...need to unload that CF card! m_barbu1
I'm particularly fond of the latest Sandisk Extreme Firewire card reader. With an Extreme IV card, you can get up to 40 MB per second throughput. I use an Extreme III card and get about 20 MB per second with it. Of course, that means you'll need a FireWire port. If it's not built-in on your Vista machine, perhaps you can get an expansion card for it?
andy_szeto
I uninstalled the current version and just downloaded and installed the new, full version from Canon site on my pc running Vista and it worked. Try it and see if this works for you.
