Software for AI picture indexing - help wanted!

Hey,

 

I have been taking digital pictures since 2002 and have approx. 500K of them archived in various external HDDs. Finally I have decided to index them into a searchable, usable gallery! Since it will take a lot of time to sort them manually, perhaps you could suggest some software or workflow solution.

 

Basically I want to:

 

1. Add face recognition and have them searchable by people featured in pictures

2. Add specific scene descriptions and keywords into Exif metadata (e.g. sunset; building; ship; car etc.)

3. Be able to search image EXIF metadata

 

I do not want to upload the pictures to any online service (takes time; storage will cost; privacy issues). I want to have a searchable indexed gallery on my home PC.

 

So my questions:

1. Does any software have face recognition capabilities?

2. Does any photo management software has AI for scene / object description and can automatically update EXIF metadata?

3. What is the best tool for Exif metadata search?

 

Or simply - how would you address my situation? What is your workflow for managing/tagging your gallery backlog?

 

I came to realize that there are so many moments captured in the pictures and due to the fact that the pictures are simply arranged by filename it is difficult to rediscover them.

I think that there is none but a primrose path to cataloging images. It takes I, not AI.

 

From an earlier thread:

 

I have a collection of tens of thousands of images (they were called "slides") and developed a coding and organization based on dates and descriptive names, and

grouping in "group" slide boxes by project, date, roll#-image#, etc. Depending on when the picture was taken, not all these data are present in a given case, but the

principle holds.

I kept this system as I digitized my images and added new ones, so in the end, I use a hierarchical system of folders in folders (called "subdirectories"). When

Aperture and Lightroom came out, I got copies of both, tried them out and decided that the labor of getting images into those programs exceeded the benefits to me.

As a result, I just use Bridge and Photoshop together, and can lay my hands on most any image within minutes at the most.

 

Use folders and subfolders, I catalog by project (with nice descriptive names), then date of photograph and the numbers on the slide mount, if any.

Here is the Bridge example. Other file organizers can be used in much the same way, including the operating system itself.

To try to get it all in the first pass is self-defeating, because you'll never get it done. Rather add annotations as you use your favorites and a simple search will show "Taj" or whatever.
