Single venue stage rally - any tips?

Next month I'm going to be shooting my first ever stage rally - now

I'm looking forward to this with some degree of anticipation as it

is good to try something a bit different (I usually shoot oval stock

car racing) but I'm also a little freaked out as I'm not entirely

sure exactly what to expect. I'm also embarrassed to admit I've

never been to a rally before either...

It isn't so much about the photography itself as I'm more than

familliar with the types of images that are expected of me, but more

about the way of working and what sort of things I should be aware

of. FYI the rally is a single venue event one day event, with the

special stages located within the grounds of Rockingham Motor

Speedway.

If any of you have experience of shooting stage rallies and would be

willing to share any tips on working practices, then I'd be looking

forward to hearing from you.

Single venue means you're going to get more chances than you'd get with a normal Rally. BUT not as many chances as you'd get with your normal subjects.

The obvious thigs first, Never try to photograph from an obviously dangerous place, Shots of Rally cars are best from; the inside of bends, the outside of the bend (on the entrance to it is safe)try to capture the peak of the action as the car is sliding round the bend. Don't use too high a shutter speed as the car will look stationery. There will probably be a water splash and jump set up and if you're official photog, you'll probably need shots of these. Get low for the jump shot to catch the air under the car, and don't get close enough to the water to get wet, but the only interesting watersplash shot is head on as the car emerges.

Good luck.
